Orchid Extravaganza at Longwood Gardens

image

The fabled Longwood Gardens in Kenneth Square, Pennsylvania attracts visitors from around the world.  I am lucky to live less than an hour away and visit often.  The founder, Pierre S du Pont and his wife Alice, had a passion for orchids.  Orchids were one of the first plant collections established in 1922 and the permanent collection is on display year round.  Come February however, Longwood Gardens celebrates the beauty, variety and art form of orchids in a spectacular Orchid Extravaganza show.  Ongoing until March 27th this year, the entire conservatory showcases breath taking displays of thousands of orchids.  From a 12 foot tall archway at the entrance of the conservatory made entirely of orchids, this special show will stamp out any winter blues.  It is enchanting, enthralling and uplifting all at once.  If you can’t make it to Longwood Gardens, please join me in a virtual tour.

Many woodland displays such as this one featured orchids as they would be seen in their natural habitat.

Did you know vanilla beans are produced by a particular kind of orchid? On the left are the climbing Vanilla Orchids, not yet in bloom. To the right is an image of the green vanilla bean pods that will form on the orchid later in the season. These are the pods that are harvested by hand and dried into the familiar black vanilla bean used in baking.

Giant topiaries were created with orchids throughout the conservatory.

  1. Just gorgeous eh Johanne? Yes, indeed we are so fortunate to have these gardens just up the road – it takes me about 15 minutes to get there. Unfortunately I’ve let my membership expire, but I do have friends who visit regularly, and I usually tag along with them. They say this is probably the best orchid extravaganza!

    • I would agree Loretta. I think this year they balanced the orchid displays with a lot of fragrant spring plantings which I felt allowed the orchids to shine more. Worth going to see. Flower Show this Friday for the members’ preview which was a birthday gift from a friend. Can’t wait!

      • Yes, I’ve been to Chanticleer, loved it! Our wee group @ Goodstay Gardens is planning a field trip to Chanticleer – I was thinking of asking you if you’d like to be our guide :). WE haven’t started volunteering yet, but I know any day now, we’ll get an email asking to get our butts into the garden to work. I’ll keep you posted if you’re up for it.

  2. Oh heavens!!! Thank you for the trip without the plane from here! I’m Shari g this one with several friends. Thank you so much!

  4. I too love Longwood Gardens Johanne. What a spectacular display of orchids. Such exotic and colorful flowers. Growing up in Puerto Rico, my mom had various types of orchids. All exquisite, elegant and very graceful.

I do enjoy visiting Longwood Gardens a few times a year and I also stop at Terrain with each visit. Another great destination for garden inspiration. We are blessed to have such history and natural beauty minutes away.
